Another Great Night on the Pali
Last night the pali flow amazed and delighted our guests once again with many active breakouts and a really neat lava cave which reminded us of a pizza oven. Nice weather and a starry sky made our walk back sweet.

Amazing 'A'a Flow on the Pali
Last night our hardy guests were well rewarded for the long and challenging hike with a massive pahoehoe flow which then turned to 'a'a and created a 20 foot high glowing wall of lava. Then, as if that weren't enough, it broke open to reveal huge river of pahoehoe which carried chunks of glowing 'a'a. There can be no question - this hike is extreme! But if you're a fit, expedition style hiker and up to the challenge it can be the experience of a lifetime. For everyone else, we hope to see lava at a more accessible place soon.
Check out the scale of this flow - look at the person standing on the far right!

Pali Lava Flow is Vigorous!!!
This evening our scouts reported a sudden surge of vigor in the pali flow, perhaps due to continued  inflation, or even today's 3.5 earthquake located nearby. This is great news for those who are able to make the 8-9 mile round trip hike up the pali. We will resume tours tomorrow at 2pm. (I will post photos as soon as I get a hold of them)
Yay! :)

New Daily Lava Updates!
Things are changing around quite a bit lately and lava activity is fluctuating. Who knows what will happen next?                        The upper reaches of the Peace Day Flow tube system have been reoccupied with lava for the last week or so, but the only                       breakouts are high up on the pali at about 1400' elevation. This is a very challenging 8-9 mile (14 km) hike and we only want to offer tours when we feel conditions are safe and lava activity will be high.
We've added an activity update page to our website where you can find the latest updates and tour information.
Just click HERE.

Robust, Active Surface Flow
Our guests have enjoyed a robust and very active surface flow over the last week
which creeps ever so slowly seaward. Inflation events this week set the stage for some
amazing breakouts and lots of flowing lava! Come join us soon and see for yourself!

'A'a Flows Down the Sea Cliff and Large Surface Flow
On last night's guided hike our guests watched as a rare 'a'a flow moved down the edge of the sea cliff toward the ocean.
Lava continued to enter the ocean but our view was partially obscured by part of the bench.
Then we enjoyed watching a very large, very active surface flow with many breakouts.

Lots of Lava Enters the Ocean and Wide Active Surface Flow
Last night we and our guests watch a lovely late summer evening settle over
the ocean entry as lava pumped into the blue Pacific. Then we were able to enjoy
a nice, wide active surface flow with many breakouts. Perfect weather and a half
moon and stars in the sky made it a wonderful night that no one will forget.

Streams of Lava Cascade Down the Entire Ocean Bench
Meteors Streak Across a Clear, Starry Sky!
Last night the ocean entry put on a spectacular show with many vigorous streams of lava
falling down to the ocean along the whole bench. It was really gorgeous and action packed.
We also saw a few meteors from the Perseid Shower, which peaked in the early hours today.

Lava Delta Grows and Surface Flow Returns
Continued inflation is responsible for the active surface flows we've been able to see on the coastal plain this week and for continuing activity at the ocean entry where the lava delta, or bench, grows and breaks away.
Inflation and deflation happen in cycles - like the volcano is breathing. Take a deep breath and enjoy!

  Lava Cave
Last night our lucky guests enjoyed a very active surface flow and witnessed the formation of a small inflationary cave or "lift up" cave. This happens as gas and pressure build inside the cooling crust of new lava and a portion breaks away to reveal a glowing chamber. This one had a stream of lava flowing within it (See the cool video). The ocean entry was also lovely, with lots of  lava moving along the ever-changing bench.

Lava Continues to Pump from a Beautiful Ocean Entry
Lava continued to vigorously flow from the ocean entry, which has changed dramatically
over the past week. The outer edge of the bench has eroded in many places and continually
breaks off, opening the way for many streams of glowing lava to meet the sea.

Last night our lucky guests were able to enjoy the wonderful sight of a very active surface flow.

We walked back under warm starry skies serenaded by the summer song of many crickets.

       Ocean Entry Going Strong
Over the past few days the ocean entry has been busy redecorating the coastline almost continuously. A portion of the outer bench broke off and we were treated to the beautiful site of many streams of lava entering the ocean at once. The bench area is quite dynamic now and we were able to watch as large pieces of glowing rock broke away giving way to rapidly flowing streams of lava. Our guests were amazed to watch the ever changing activity which included some quite dramatic littoral explosions, some of which shot up lacy ribbon spatter. We've enjoyed lovely, clear weather and a dark sky filled with stars on the way back.

       A Sultry Summer Ocean Entry
The ocean entry has not disappointed us over the last weeks and has built a rather large and lovely black sand beach. Black sand is only formed as lava enters the ocean - not by eroding rock, as in other places. Black sand beaches are ephemeral since they not renewed after the lava flow stops flowing nearby.
Make us appreciate them while we can!

Ever Changing Ocean Entry with Continuing Surface Flows
The old bench that collapsed has given way to a dynamic new coastline with lots of activity. We've consistently seen multiple streams of lava flowing into the ocean for the last couple of weeks. Some of them have been 'a'a flows which are always exciting to see. Other nights there have been many littoral explosion fireworks to thrill our lucky guests. Surface flows have been active and we've been able to get close safely.

Earthquake! Ocean Entry Continues, Nice Surface Flows
This afternoon china spilled from cabinets and coconuts fell from trees as a 5.6 quake shook the Islands.
No real damage was done but it serves as a reminder that the Earth's unseen and mysterious forces are at work beneath us. The lava flowed vigorously at the ocean entry and we were able to see a large active surface flow nearby. Up on the pali a large but sporadic breakout waxed and waned as we made our way home. Perfect weather and a sky full of bright stars completed our night's guided lava walk.

Awesome 'A'a Flow at the Ocean Entry
Check out this video from one of this week's tours. The lava delta, or bench, which had been building collapsed away some time in the wee hours of the morning the day before. Our guests were able to safely view multiple streams of glowing pahoehoe enter the ocean and this marvelous cascade of 'a'a which tumbled down the 70 foot cliff in front of us. Enjoy!

        May 16, 2013

       Fire Hose!
Last night we witnessed a phenomenon at the ocean entry known as a "fire hose", in which lava shoots out of a tube perched above the ocean. These are relatively rare occurrences and generally do not last long. This particular one was huge - maybe 20 feet long. Lava gushed from it into the sea for about 30 minutes until the bottom of the tube collapsed away - caught in the last photo here. Amazing!

Amazing Show at the Ocean Entry!
Last night on our guided lava walk we were able to see lava entering the ocean at two locations. One was explosively shooting sparks high into the air and the other was fed by a wide brightly glowing flow. A vigorous flow broke out and formed a lava cascade down the sea cliff which fed a long river of glowing pahoehoe. The flow even turned to glittering 'a'a in several places. We were watching this scene from the edge of the sea cliff about 50 feet above. Check out this video and photos and share our awe!

Enjoy these photos from our week's guided hikes in celebration of the magnificent, creative,

This week the lava continues to pour into the ocean at several points and our guests have been able to safely get close to some nice active surface flows. A new flow continues to make its way down from high up on the pali and we've been able to see a lot of glow from the distant lava lake in Pu'u 'O'o.  We've enjoyed fair weather, starry skies and the ever welcome return of the cool trade winds.
